siesta beach is number one in the nation!
Those who live and vacation in Sarasota, Fla., have long recognized Siesta Beach as a natural treasure. Today, the rest of the world was let in on the secret when Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, aka "Dr. Beach," named Siesta Beach "America's Best Beach" as part of his annual list of America's top 10 beaches.
Siesta Beach, located on Siesta Key, an eight-mile-long, crescent-shaped barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico, is known for its powdery white sand, which is comprised of 99 percent pure quartz and stays relatively cool, no matter how high the temperature rises. Siesta Beach also attracts visitors and locals with its clear blue water; a laid-back ambiance; a wide array of bars, restaurants and shops; and accommodations ranging from casual to luxurious.
Dr. Leatherman, Director of Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research, has selected the Top 10 Beaches annually since 1991. Fifty criteria are used to evaluate beaches, including water and sand quality as well as safety and environmental management. According to his website, "His annual list of America's Top 10 Beaches is to the travel and tourism industry what the Oscar is to the movie industry."
Congratulations again to Siesta Beach!

you catch 'em, we'll cook 'em
They say that a bad day of fishing is better than a good day in the office. No matter how enjoyable it may be, a day on the water in search of the big one is bound to result in an even bigger appetite. With the new "Fresh Catch" program at Currents Restaurant, anglers can kick back and relax while the talented culinary team at Hyatt Regency Sarasota creates a gourmet meal to their specifications.
Our Sarasota airport hotel draws some serious anglers to a private 32-slip marina, where they are just steps away from a delicious dish. All fishermen need to do is clean and fillet their fish, so it is ready to be cooked to perfection. Fresh catches can be prepared in grilled, blackened, seared or pan-fried fashion. Each succulent creation is accompanied by the chef's daily selection of fresh vegetables and starch. Fisherman can enjoy their meals at Currents overlooking the hotel's picturesque marina or take them to go. Either way, the cost to see a prize catch go from hook to platter is just $18.00.
"We wanted to give those who use our marina the chance to unwind and recount their fish tales over a cocktail at Currents Bar without having to worry about how and when they will be able to cook up dinner," said Executive Chef Aaron Chavarria. "We welcome fishermen to stop by, take advantage of the 'Fresh Catch' program and even share their stories about the one that got away!"
Currents also offers a mouth-watering selection of "Floribbean" favorites to start the "Fresh Catch" experience on the right foot ... or fin. Guests can choose from succulent appetizers such as Tropical Cajun Scallops served with cucumber, mango and roasted pepper; Currents Restaurant is open daily for lunch from 11:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. and dinner from 5:00p.m. until 12:00a.m. (midnight). For breakfast, a full menu and bountiful buffet are also available from 6:30a.m. to 11:00a.m.
The hotel's marina offers a convenient spot to dock, just steps away from Currents. It accommodates yachts up to 28 feet and provides dock master services, 30 / 50 AMP power, a pump-out station and washers and dryers for the convenience of boaters. Charter services are also available. Click here for more information about our marina.
hyatt regency sarasota goes green
Hyatt Regency Sarasota has been recognized for its environmentally friendly operations and has received One Palm designation from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Green Lodging Program. Throughout the past year, in addition to completely transforming its appearance and enhancing its service standards, Hyatt Regency Sarasota has initiated programs to reduce, reuse and recycle throughout all areas of the hotel.
"The goal of our $22 million renovation has been to enhance all aspects of the hotel, including our level of environmental responsibility," said General Manager Mark Becker. "Going green isn't just a trend. It's something that has become crucially important to our guests, staff and the local community. Sarasota has always been known for its natural beauty, and I'm proud that Hyatt Regency Sarasota is doing its part to keep it that way."
In addition to the green practices the hotel has instituted operationally, Executive Chef Aaron Chavarria is committed to supporting local growers and food suppliers. He incorporates the freshest local and organic ingredients, as well as seasonal selections into his menus for both banquets and Currents Restaurant whenever possible.
To become a designated member of the Florida Green Lodging Program, hotels must implement a variety of green practices. These practices include – but are not limited to – water conservation measures through low-flow plumbing fixtures and a linen reuse program, and energy efficiency achieved by installing ENERGY STAR appliances and programmable thermostats. The waste reduction criteria are met by providing the opportunity to recycle, purchasing items in bulk, using recycled materials and by recycling ink and toner cartridges. All designated members of the Florida Green Lodging Program must also use green cleaners and high-efficiency air filters, and clean air handler units frequently.
